Northern Venezuela in Desperate Need of Prayer

Massive 7.5 earthquake leaves Northern Venezuela devastated.

YUMARE, VENEZUELA – Prayer is desperately needed for the people of Venezuela! On June 24, 2026, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake occurred southeast of Yumare in the northern region of the country. This earthquake was the mainshock in a double event, following a magnitude 7.2 earthquake 39 seconds earlier. Yes, in essence, the area endured two 7+ earthquakes in less than a minute – bringing unprecedented death and destruction.

At the time of the initial disaster, the United States Geological Survey anticipated heavy casualties and damage. Though actual losses are still being calculated at the time of this writing, according the the USGS, well over 500,000 people lived within the Severe and Violent shaking zones near the epicenter of the quake, with many more being impacted in areas of lesser intensity. Even so, as aftershocks have continued throughout the week, risks to life and infrastructure remain high. As the USGS shared, “Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are vulnerable to earthquake shaking, though resistant structures exist. The predominant vulnerable building types are unreinforced brick masonry and adobe block construction.”

The June 24 quake occurred as a result of shallow strike-slip faulting near the complex plate boundary between the Caribbean and South American plates. At the location of the earthquake, the Caribbean plate moves eastward relative to South America at a rate of about 20 mm/yr. The earthquake’s location, shallow depth (10.0 km), and right-lateral strike-slip mechanism are consistent with rupture along this plate boundary system along the San Sebastian fault system, which extends along the northern coast of Venezuela.

Northern Venezuela has a history of large, damaging earthquakes. However, in the immediate 250 km vicinity of the recent earthquakes, there have only been seven M6 and larger quakes in the past century. The region recently experienced a doublet in September 2025 consisting of an M 6.2 and an M 6.3 earthquake WSW of the 2026 event. The 2025 sequence caused at least one fatality, over 110 injuries, and extensive structural damage across Zulia and Lara. In September 2009, an M 6.4 earthquake to the ENE injured 18 people and damaged buildings near Morón, and an M 6.0 event in 1989 caused slight damage in the Valencia area. Farther west, an M 6.1 earthquake struck the region in April 1975. The most devastating modern earthquake in the surrounding area was the July 1967 M 6.6 Caracas earthquake, centered approximately 131 km to the east, which caused around 240 fatalities, hundreds of injuries, the collapse of multiple high-rise apartment buildings, and widespread destruction. In broader Venezuela, there have been five M 7+ earthquakes in the north or near the coast since 1900.

With hundreds of deaths now recorded, thousands injured, and many families displaced, help is desperately needed. Rescue and relief efforts in the region are ongoing, but you do not need to travel to Venezuela to help. For Christians, there are several meaningful ways to get involved.

First and foremost pray! Ask the Lord to comfort those who have lost loved ones. Pray that God’s presence would be tangible in the midst of so much sorrow and uncertainty. Many people remain missing – likely trapped under piles of debris – and search-and-rescue teams continue to work around the clock. Pray for strength, wisdom, protection, and success for the rescuers. Hospitals and medical personnel are also under tremendous pressure. Pray for healing, adequate medical supplies, and effective treatment for those suffering injuries. And please do not forget the children in the areas of impact. Kids so often experience deep emotional trauma after disasters – haunting them for years to come, especially after severe loss. Pray for their protection, emotional recovery, and provision of basic necessities. Local congregations frequently become centers for such necessities, including shelter, food distribution, counseling, and spiritual care. Pray that churches would be equipped to minister effectively and point people to Christ in this difficult season. And above all, pray for a spiritual awakening among the people of Venezuela. Throughout Scripture, times of crisis often become opportunities for people to seek the Lord. Pray that many Venezuelans would find hope in Christ and that the believers in the nation would be bold and compassionate witnesses.

Second, look for hands-on ways to help where possible. These might include giving to trusted organizations who have boots on the ground at the scene of the disaster – World Vision International, World Food Programme (WFP), UNICEF, Mercy Corps, and Global Empowerment Mission (GEM) are notable examples. Encourage your church to respond through special offerings, partnering with trusted ministries already in Venezuela, and focused prayer gatherings. And finally, make sure to spread only accurate information. Many people are unaware of the scale of the disaster. Sharing verified information and reputable relief opportunities can help direct additional resources where they are needed most.

In Scripture, Christ promised that, “In this world you will have trouble” but He also quickly added “But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33 NIV). The quakes in Venezuela are not the first and definitely won’t be the last disasters this world is called to face. Even so, every disaster, every trauma, even just every regular day is a chance for the people of God to shine for His glory. May Christ use His people around the world to bring both practical help and the hope of the Gospel to those suffering in Venezuela and to the very ends of the Earth.
