WEST PALM BEACH, FLORIDA – Travelers to South Florida, be prepared for change! For decades, Palm Beach International Airport has welcomed countless visitors under the familiar airport code “PBI.” Now, as part of a new Florida law, the airport will officially become President Donald J. Trump International Airport, with the code “DJT.”
The change was not instigated by Palm Beach International or even President Trump himself. In March of this year, Florida lawmakers enacted legislation transferring the authority to name major commercial service airports to the State of Florida. The law specifically renamed Palm Beach International Airport to President Donald J. Trump International Airport and directed Palm Beach County to complete the necessary federal approvals and implement the required branding changes. Because the new airport name is protected by trademark, Palm Beach County also entered into a licensing agreement governing how the name may be used while complying with state law.
The name change will occur in manageable stages that should have little impact on day to day travelers. Final approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is anticipated on July 9, 2026. At that time, airport signage, branding, websites, publications and aviation systems will begin reflecting the new name. Many of these branding changes are already in process including new signage on I95. Officials emphasize that airport operations will continue without interruption throughout the process. Travelers may notice that some signs still display the former name for a period of time while others have already been updated. This gradual rollout is intentional and is designed to avoid disrupting normal airport operations. The new code “DJT” will go officially go into effect on August 18. However, even now using DJT on travel websites like Orbitz or Expedia will bring up Palm Beach International.
Airport officials emphasize that flights will continue operating on their normal schedules. Airlines will continue serving the same destinations. Parking, security screening, baggage claim, rental cars, restaurants and airport services will all continue operating as usual. The change is one of branding rather than operations. Ownership, governance and day-to-day management remain under Palm Beach County. In other words, passengers should expect the same convenient and professional airport experience they have always known.
If you are flying into or out of South Florida during the transition, a little preparation can help avoid confusion.
- Continue using PBI when booking flights until August 18, 2026. (Though as noted DJT is already working on multiple travel sites).
- After August 18, begin using the new airport code DJT as PBI will be phased out.
- Do not be surprised if maps, airline apps and road signs display different names during the transition period.
- Arrive at the airport as you normally would. Airport officials do not anticipate disruptions to airline operations or passenger services.
Airport name changes are relatively uncommon, and changes involving both the airport’s official name and its airline code are even rarer. While opinions about the new name will undoubtedly vary, the practical impact on travelers is expected to be minimal. For residents of Palm Beach County and visitors arriving in South Florida, the familiar airport known for its convenience and efficiency will continue serving the region much as it always has. The signs over the terminal may change, but travelers can expect the same runways, the same airlines, and the same commitment to providing a safe and welcoming gateway to the Palm Beaches!
