We should come to the Bible with the intention of walking humbly before our God. We should not bring our own agendas to the Bible and expect it to twist and bend to our will. If that is our intention, we might as well leave our Bibles on the shelf.
This seems to come to my mind more and more these days. Yesterday I saw a politician twisting the scriptures to support an agenda and practice the biblical God clearly abhors. I pray the man repents quickly, for the consequences are severe for those who pervert the word of God for their own purposes. None of us can bring our agendas to the Bible and expect it to bend for us. It is we that must bend our knees to God and His word.
As it is written:
Woe to those who call evil good
Isaiah 5:20 ESV
and good evil,
who put darkness for light
and light for darkness,
who put bitter for sweet
and sweet for bitter!
And also:
How can a young man keep his way pure?
Psalm 119:9-11 ESV
By guarding it according to your word.
With my whole heart I seek you;
let me not wander from your commandments!
I have stored up your word in my heart,
that I might not sin against you.
