Every day, the Lord has countless reasons to condemn any one of us. Our sins, our weaknesses, and even our best intentions fall short of His perfect holiness. As Scripture says, “…all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23, BSB). Left to ourselves, we would have no hope. Even “…all our righteous acts are like filthy rags…” (Isaiah 64:6, BSB).
And yet, though the reasons for judgment multiply by tens of thousands daily, God saves us for one reason alone: the finished work of His Son Jesus Christ. The cross stands as His ultimate expression of love — the once-for-all sacrifice that opens the way to forgiveness and new and eternal life. As the Apostle Paul wrote, “God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8, BSB).
No work we perform can earn this salvation. We labor as Christians, yes, but not to save ourselves by our own righteousness. We work to reflect the goodness of the One who saved us and to express our deep love for Him. Jesus Himself taught that our good works shine before others “…that they may see [our] good deeds and glorify [our] Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16, BSB). But salvation itself is never earned. It is entirely a gift: “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8–9, BSB).
Even the faith by which we cling to Christ is a gift from His hand. Because salvation rests wholly on Christ, it is firm, sure, and unchanging. Our confidence is not in ourselves but in Him who finished the work on our behalf. He is the solid rock on which redeemed sinners stand secure.
And this is why our hearts return to one simple truth: Only Jesus can save. Only Jesus. He is the only reason.
