“Mary, Did You Know?” is a beloved Christmas song that explores the question – “Did Mary truly know about the incredible destiny her Son would face?” No doubt, as the mother of the Messiah, Mary’s was a motherhood like no other in history – filled with may uncertainties. Nevertheless, when it came to Jesus, in case anyone was wondering, yes, Mary did know.
It all began with the Archangel Gabriel who told her in Luke 1:31-33, “And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
Later in verse 35 Gabriel added, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God.”
Finally, at the Temple in Jerusalem Simeon warned her in Luke 2:34-35, “Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.”
Mary knew. She knew, and yet her conviction was this, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38). Oh, that we could all be of the same attitude no matter the burden God calls us to bear!
