Today in Sunday school I taught Nehemiah 8-10, which is all about when Ezra read the Scriptures to the restored nation of Israel after the Babylonian captivity. Likely most of those people had not heard the word of God in decades, if ever, and the fact that none of them owned their own copies seems obvious. Naturally, they threw a celebration days long with Scripture reading every day. I counted up, and I have at least 22 separate copies of the Bible in my apartment – and I am the only one who ever uses them if they get used at all! In this day, it is very easy to take the word of God for granted since it is so easily available to us, but perhaps we should take a cue from ancient Israel. We have much more of the Word to celebrate than they did, so we should be celebrating a whole lot more!
