In a book I am reading about John Calvin, I am currently in a chapter about what was called the Consistory. In simple terms this was a group that dealt with the sins and problems of the people of the Geneva Reformed Church. The issues they addressed were as varied and complex as we might find today. Yet there seems to have been a common theme in their prescriptions for these problems. Repeated often, these wayward souls were told to “frequent the sermons.” In other words, “Go to church! Listen to what is taught and apply it!” I can’t help but wonder how many lives in our modern world would be changed if they would only follow such sound advice.
