Though I was very blessed to have lost nothing during this hurricane, before I evacuated my home I had resolved myself that some or all of my possessions could be lost. The truth is what we think ‘belongs’ to us, God has only ordained to be in our lives temporarily. Things and people can be lost in a moment. Even our own lives in this world are transitory. Christ is the only one we can hold onto for eternity. When you realize that, you are quick to thank Him for the blessings of the temporary things. And when those things are lost (and they will be), you will always still have what matters for eternity.
Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit.” Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. Instead, you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that.” But as it is, you boast in your arrogance; all such boasting is evil.”
James 4:13-16 ESV
