SALEM, OREGON – TEAM Missionaries Jason and Sarah Sheets shared about their ministry in Peru with Salem First Baptist Church at a recent Sunday service.
The Sheets family is definitely a mainstay here on The Believer’s Byline. We love this dear missionary family and are excited to share every update about their ministry that we can get. This summer the Sheets are back in the United States on home assignment in their hometown of Salem, Oregon, where Jason and Sarah were both raised and eventually met and married. On Sunday, July 27, the Sheets had the opportunity to visit Salem First Baptist, the church where Sarah grew up.
They participated briefly in a Q & A at the beginning of each main service and later shared more in detail about their ministry in two combined Sunday School hours. The Sheets’ family update included the fact that their 18-year-old son Nathan will be remaining in the States to begin his adult life, and that their 16-year-old daughter Evelyn had the opportunity to participate in a mission trip to Spain through Royal Servants. At the time of the service, Evelyn was boarding a plane in Chicago to reunite with her family in Oregon after five weeks abroad.
During the Q & A, Jason shared a little about what church planting looks like in the context of their ministry in Peru, “Church planting…is going into a community that you could say is unreached by the Gospel.” He went on to describe Peru as a very religious place with a very religious culture, but it is absent of the Gospel and absent of knowing Christ. Jason explained, “We serve in a community where we kind of see ourselves as a lighthouse. We want to be in this community and shine the light of Jesus through the study of His word, the preaching and teaching of His word, and the making of disciples.”
The Sheets were also excited to share that despite their absence this summer, the ministry at their church plant in Ciudad de Dios continues. God has raised up a faithful Peruvian man name Hugo (pronounced “Oogo”) Morales who both co-pastors with Jason and leads the church while the Sheets are away. Hugo is a solid man of God and the Sheets are quite confident to step away while the church is under his care. In fact, Hugo’s reputation of faithfulness has so preceded him that Salem First Baptist has actually been supporting him for years. As Jason put it, “[Hugo] is a man who is preaching, teaching, discipling, and is being used by God in a mighty way in His church.”
When asked how Salem First Baptist could pray for them, the Sheets requested prayer specifically for their son Nathan who will be staying behind when the family returns to Peru as he begins his adult life. They also asked that the Gospel would be proclaimed boldly in their ministry, and a special request for prayer was made for the Peruvian men in Ciudad de Dios as many women come to church without their husbands. Sarah shared a final request for 11 youth in their community who were at camp that weekend and many of them are not believers. She asked that the Lord would touch their hearts.
As always we will continue to pray for the Sheets and their ministry. If you would like to learn more about the Sheets or the vast ministry of TEAM as a whole, please visit team.org.
