JUPITER, FLORIDA – Florida Thunderstorm Adventures – Part (I don’t even know at this point): Today I decided to go running, but since the weather was forecast to be bad a little later I decided to drive my car someplace to run rather than doing a long run from my house. That way I could stay close to my car should the weather turn foul.
I drove to my spot, parked, took my car key off the ring and put it in my pocket like I have done a hundred times before. I started to run and about 20 minutes in the weather deteriorated. Rain was pouring, thunder was roaring, and lightning alarms were going off like crazy.
No problem, I thought. I’ll just go back to my car. I picked up my pace, but then about a block away from my car I felt my pocket and MY KEY WAS GONE!
NO! Again I cursed myself for always getting into these situations! It was pointless to go back to my car, so I turned around and reran the path I had just come from hoping to find my key. The rain and thunder grew more intense, but staring certain death in the face I pressed on!
Eventually I had rerun almost my entire loop and never did find the key. Now soaked to the brim, I had no choice – I had to walk the three miles home – the very thing I was trying to avoid in the first place.
Thankfully the weather started letting up, so the walk home was only annoying, not dangerous. Once I got home and got my spare key, I debated taking an Uber back to get my car. In the end though I opted to ride my bike. The weather was mostly better and the ride passed without incident. I did another loop on my bike around my running area, but still no key.
I was downcast enough for one day, but then when I finally got to my car, the front wheel on my bike, which I normally have to remove to fit my bike into my car, jammed! Try as I might I could not loosen it with my bare hands. I ended up having to stick my bike in my car with the front wheel hanging out the rear of my open trunk.
People who haul things like that always make me nervous, and I prayed I would not cross paths with any police cars. I didn’t, but one particular driver kept following me despite the fact I was driving under the speed limit and the passing lane was wide open. Thankfully though I made it home without further incident.
I’ll be heading to Home Depot later to get another key. May my old key rest in peace in whatever gutter or patch of grass it ended up in!
